BC Building Trades honours memory of Premier John Horgan with $45,000 donation to BC Cancer

B.C. construction unions donating $1 for every member

John Horgan is being remembered fondly today by BC Building Trades unions and their members. Throughout his political career, Horgan was a friend to construction workers and a true champion of working people.

To honour John Horgan’s memory, BC Building Trades unions are donating $45,000 to cancer research and care in B.C. That’s $1 for every member.

“John was a tremendous person and a brilliant political leader who was taken from us too soon,” said Brynn Bourke, executive director of the BC Building Trades Council. “We hope this donation reflects our deep appreciation for his contributions to construction unions, the labour movement and B.C. as a whole.”

John Horgan had a unique and special relationship with B.C.’s construction unions. To this day, he is the only politician to ever be named a lifetime honorary member of the BC Building Trades.

“John strongly believed that supporting unionized workers meant supporting families and supporting communities,” said Bourke. “He was a proud union ally and wasn’t afraid to say it.”

The donation to BC Cancer in John’s memory will contribute to those folks in B.C. facing their own experiences with this terrible disease.

“This heartfelt tribute from the BC Building Trades Council reflects John’s legacy of advocacy and leadership,” said Sarah Roth, president and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation. “This will help enhance BC Cancer’s care for families across B.C.”

The BC Building Trades extends its condolences to John Horgan’s family, friends, colleagues and all who were touched by his kindness.

About the BC Building Trades Council

Established in 1967, the BC Building Trades represents 20 local craft construction unions and more than 45,000 unionized construction workers in B.C. These highly skilled workers account for approximately 55 per cent of the non-residential construction labour force. We work with construction companies to leverage the most out of development for all stakeholders, to advance the economic prosperity of the province, to put local workers first and to ultimately build a better British Columbia.
