Today’s announcement by John Horgan and the BC NDP commits to using British Columbians to build BC. For nearly two decades, BC construction workers have found themselves standing on the outside of BC public infrastructure projects watching workers from other parts of Canada and indeed Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) do their jobs.

The BC Building Trades was encouraged by today’s announcement by the province that it would match the federal commitment for transit in Metro Vancouver.

The BC Building Trades was offended and outraged to hear the BC Liberal government announce it would redirect tens of millions of dollars in funds to employers and away from injured workers.

The BC Building Trades welcomed the 2017 budget commitment by the Federal Government to fund the Metro Mayor’s Transit Plan. At the same time, the Council was disappointed to see the Province refuse to move its share of funding from 33% - 40%.

Employment statistics released by BC Hydro on Friday reveal only 40 apprentices are working on the Site C project out of a workforce of 1,916.

BC Hydro recently released employment statistics for the Site C project for November 2016. The report reveals 18% of workers, which equals 246, on the project were from outside BC.
